For those doing business in Canada you will have at least once thought of .ca domain name registration. After all, the .ca domain extension represents your country of dwelling and business. At the same time you have probably looked at .com domains. Mainly because they are recognized internationally and pretty much by everyone.

Your choice of registering ca domain names or something else like the com alternative is how local or international your business is. Let’s look at the reasons for each.

Register ca domain names

You will want to select a Canada domain name if you exclusively go for local clients. So let’s say you are a local roofing company, who will only work in a specific location or area. Let’s say you only service the province of Ontario and the greater Toronto area. For you the .ca tld will help you rank for people searching within Canada, and provide the instant recognition that you do service that area because people will recognize .ca. When you want that recognition and advantage in the search engines like google, then domain name registration canada would be your choice. The only drawback will be people who automatically assume you also own the .com. In this case, it would probably be a good idea to register the .com as well and have it forward to your .ca site.

Registering a .com or other TLD

First let’s discuss everthing but the .com. So extensions like .net or .org. These ones will have the same problems of everyone assuming .com, so you may as well choose the .ca to represent your business origin. The .org is a better choice than even the Canada domain extension if you are actually running a non for profit organization, since that extension is meant for that.

Now .com is the all time favorite. Everyone assumes it or tries it first when looking for your site. You should probably always get this even if you think a different extension is better. So with a ca domain name, you should still get this tld and forward like mentioned above.

Ideally get as many tld’s as you can if you are branding your domain name. So a person in Canada may want to look at the .ca, as well as .com, .net and .org. Just as someone in the USA would probably register a .us extension.

If you are not worried about people taking the other extensions and you target canadians only, then CA domain name registration is probably a wise choice to use as your main site URL.

If you are on the search for a domain name, you will want to research and find out who the best domain registrar is. To know who the best is, you should match their features up to ensure they cover the areas a good domain service provider should offer. Today’s post will cover what to look out for when shopping around on the different web sites.

One of the main things is the actual site and how useable it is. If the site doesn’t convey a professional image, and every time you search you are having breakdowns or errors, then you want to stay clear from that provider. If the site does not work, how can you be sure their domain registration process in the background will not have similar problems.

The next is how much control you have with the domain and the information associated with it. You should have the ability to change your own nameservers yourself right away. You also want the ability to update your contact information quickly, else you may risk losing your domain due to ICANN rules. Believe it or not, there are some smaller companies that will need to do it manually for you and you need to call in the information. This happens a lot with a web designer controlling everything for you and they will need to make the change. You may as well have complete control yourself to make the changes, and normally the web designer will charge you a fee on top of the regular cost for their time.

Finally, and one of the biggest combos for making a provider the best domain registrar is a mix of an affordable price with the support you deserve. Nowadays, the minimum should be 24 hours x 7 days a week support schedule. You are open online non stop, so your registrar’s support office should be as well to help you if something were to go wrong. For prices, you can easily find registrars offering domains in the ten and under range. This of course depends on the domain extension, as each tld is a different price. You never want to go too cheap, but with the streamlined process of getting domains registered nowadays, you will find price has gone down a lot and that low cost domain registrars are providing the same and even better services.

Hope that gives you a better evaluation of what to expect from your domain registration provider! Don’t settle for anything less.

In today’s post we will highlight the topic of How to Transfer a Domain Name. There could be many reasons to choose a domain name transfer including price and your satisfaction level with your current registrar. If you could save a few dollars per domain name and have many to transfer the savings does add up. Let’s see how the process would be in switching your domain over here to Domains at Retail.

First let’s highlight our article dedicated to this very topic: “Transferring Domains to Us”

As the article states you need to remember a few things first:

To unlock your domain

An authorization code for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .us, .tv, or .info domains

A valid domain administrative contact

This ensure the process is as smooth as can be.

Once your are ready follow the following steps for starting the transfer and some helpful tips:

Authorizing Domain Transfers to Your Account

Helpful Tips

Something to make a note of is that the time it takes for everything to complete can be a week (depending where its being transferred from and other circumstances). Also, if you want to transfer a .EU domain, you will need to follow the “Transferring .EU Domains to Us” process.

The article linked above will help indicate how to transfer from the following registrars:

1&1

eNom

iHoldings, Inc.

Network Solutions

Melbourne IT

Register.com

directNIC

Tucows

Dotster

Today we’re just putting up a quick post about web address availability, as it has been a question that is being asked from time to time. Some are not quite sure what it is and are wondering if it is the same as domain name availability.

In short, yes! If you are looking for the availability of a web address, your are trying to find out if the domain name is available. A domain name is your web address online for your customers. What you will want to do for website address registration is visit our Domain Name Registration Page and begin your search to see if the address is in fact available. Many are so be persistent and look for variations of what you are looking for.

Once you find the domain, you will then be able to finish the process and get your domain. Be sure to check the domain name registration price before starting your search, so that you are aware of what the different top level domains (TLD’s) are going for. Info domains are the cheapest way to get a a web address, and more widely available, but the .com domain extensions is the preferred domain extension. Right now .com domains through our site are available for $7.99 USD plus the ICANN fee (currently at $0.18).

Keep checking for your web address availability and if it is taken you can do a WHOIS lookup to see who has it.

Simply getting a domain name and web hosting, plus choosing the right topic can become a gold mine if you go the “rinse and repeat” route.

This article goes into the idea that some people simply buy domains as an investment. Almost an “online real estate” that they use to make money. This article explores facts that people new to this type of idea need to understand about domains.

If you are thinking of offering the ability for membership, ecommerce or online collection of your visitors data, you should invest into the security of your visitors data. All data under regular sites (http://) come through unencrypted and can be used by the wrong people to gain your visitors information. This should be protected and the best way is for the data to be encrypted upon transmission through the internet. This involves having a web server certificate known to the Web industry as an SSL Certificate.

SSL Certificate stands for Secure Socket Layer Certificate ensuring data is encrypting to prevent others from reading your data in plain view. Now that you understand how important a ssl certificate is, you should really take the next steps and buy ssl certificate if you currently have a web site with this functionality, or if your website will soon be gaining this functionality.

Domains at Retail offers three choices for you to choose from:

Standard SSL Certificate

Domains at Retail has changed things up to offer unlimited hosting options. People were getting to the site searching for web hosting with unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space. To their dissappointment they would not find that option before.

Well we have listened to what our visitors are searching for and have changed our Premium Hosting plan to an Unlimited Web Hosting plan. You will now be able to get unlimited transfer hosting, if that fits your requirements. While the unlimited option exists, those searching for free unlimited hosting won’t find it here although we do offer free ad based hosting.

Please view our web hosting order page to get more details about the new unlimited space web hosting and unlimited bandwidth hosting we now offer.

One thing to remember, the unlimited plan does include the ability for unlimited domain hosting. What this means is you can have unlimited bandwidth and disk space, but also host 10, 20, 30 or even more web sites all under the same plan. This applies to the deluxe plan as well for multiple domain hosting, but the deluxe of course has space and transfer limits.

Remember to check out our low cost shared hosting plans.

Domain Consolidation gives you the ability to consolidate all your .COM and .NET domain name renewal dates into the same expiry date. So if you now have expiry dates such as Jan 12, 2010, July 9, 2009 and Sept 18, 2011, you can set all of these domains to expire on the exact same day, lets say Sept 18.

No more will you have your renewal dates tied strictly to your initial registration date. Keep an easy date to remember for all of your .COM and .NET domain name renewals so you never miss an expiry date. Make it easier for yourself to remember. Your domains will not be scattered across the entire year, but the same day.

Let’s see how this works with some visual guides:

Log in to your Domains at Retail Account

In the left sidebar you will see the link for “Consolidate .COM & .NET Renewals” or you can just click the link here.

Next a page will load with a list of Available domains:

Click the Domains you would like to Consolidate, or click the double arrows to select them all, as you will likely want all domains expiring at the same time for easier maintenance

Next you will select the Month and Day you would like the domains to be consolidated to, agree to the Terms and click Continue

You will now be at your Shopping Cart and complete the purchase as normal, and you are done.

Pricing is determined by the number of months adjusted per domain and has a one month minimum. Currently Public Domains are Just $1.50 per month per domain, while Private Domains are just $3.00! The price to ConsoliDate a private domain name includes the extension of the Domains By Proxy® private registration service.

Quite easily through the Control Panel you can use Domain Consolidation to remove your headaches of remembering all those expiry dates, and make it into one easy to remember day.
